FAME

A renewable biodiesel

FAME (Fatty Acid Methyl Esters) helps you reduce carbon emissions and meet your compliance obligations by blending it with diesel (B0) for road transport or with very low sulphur oil (VLSFO) for shipping. CFP Energy can supply FAME, RME and UCOME anywhere in Europe.

FAME FAQs

To help you understand some of the key FAME issues, we’ve given answers to some frequently asked questions.

FAME fuel stands for Fatty Acid Methyl Esters, a type of biodiesel produced from renewable sources such as used cooking oil, animal fats, or vegetable oils. It is commonly used either as a blending component with conventional diesel or as a standalone fuel in certain applications. In the UK and across Europe, FAME is widely used in the transport sector to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and lower greenhouse gas emissions.
FAME is produced through a process called transesterification, where natural oils or fats are reacted with methanol in the presence of a catalyst. This results in biodiesel (FAME) and glycerine as a by-product. The feedstocks are typically waste-based, including used cooking oil and tallow, making the fuel both renewable and resource-efficient. Production processes are regulated in Europe to ensure fuel quality under standards like EN 14214.
FAME fuel offers several advantages: it helps reduce CO₂ emissions, supports circular economy principles by using waste products, and can be integrated into existing diesel infrastructure with little to no modification. It is also biodegradable and has a lower sulphur content than conventional diesel. In both the UK and EU, FAME is supported under renewable transport fuel policies and widely used in road transport, agriculture, and marine sectors.
Yes, while FAME can be used in many diesel engines, there are some limitations. It has a higher water absorption rate, can lead to filter clogging in cold weather, and may cause compatibility issues with certain rubber components in older engines. For these reasons, it is often blended in low percentages (e.g. B7: 7% FAME, 93% diesel) to ensure reliability while still reducing emissions. In the UK and Europe, such blends are standard and regulated.
FAME fuel is available through fuel distributors, biodiesel producers, and blending facilities across the UK and EU. It is often supplied as part of renewable fuel blends under mandates such as the UK Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation (RTFO) or the EU Renewable Energy Directive (RED II). Many fleet operators and transport firms now work directly with suppliers to secure regular FAME deliveries or participate in low-carbon fuel procurement schemes.
