HVO100 FAQs

To help you understand some of the key HVO100 issues, we’ve given answers to some frequently asked questions.

HVO100 differs from FAME in both chemical structure and performance. While FAME is an ester and can cause engine compatibility issues at high blends, HVO100 is a hydrocarbon, chemically similar to fossil diesel. It has better cold weather performance, longer shelf life, and is free of oxygen, reducing the risk of microbial growth in fuel systems. In the UK and Europe, HVO100 is increasingly favoured for fleet decarbonisation and off-road machinery.
Yes, HVO100 can be used in most modern diesel engines without modification, provided the engine manufacturer has certified compatibility. Many leading OEMs—including Volvo, Scania, MAN, and Mercedes-Benz—have approved HVO100 for a wide range of vehicles. It offers a drop-in solution that enables businesses to switch to a low-emission fuel without needing to invest in new infrastructure or vehicles, which is especially valuable for UK and EU fleet operators.
Using HVO100 can reduce lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90% compared to regular diesel, depending on the feedstock used. It also produces fewer fine particles, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen oxides, improving local air quality. HVO100 plays a key role in the clean transport transition across the UK and Europe, especially for heavy-duty applications where full electrification is not yet practical.
HVO100 is available through a growing network of fuel distributors, wholesale suppliers, and refuelling stations in the UK and across Europe. Demand has risen sharply due to government support for renewable fuels under schemes like the UK Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation (RTFO) and the EU Renewable Energy Directive (RED II). Businesses can also arrange bulk deliveries directly from certified suppliers for fleet or industrial use.
