Just as the EU carbon market appeared to be on a one-way trip to €100, driven by increasing speculator demand, the reality of EU ETS politics has taken centre stage in recent weeks driving prices down 20% for EUAs and 40% for UKAs. This drop has served as reminder to carbon traders that EU political views are changing. Decarbonsation is still important but not at any cost, and politicians are recognising that industry needs support with the challenges of rising carbon and energy costs. It is hard to see the flagship EU ETS, which is now 20 years old, being fundamentally changed, but there are clearly changing views on what is a "fair carbon cost". Add the impact of the latest Iran conflict on gas and carbon markets and there is a lot to consider. Cyber security is critical in the renewable energy sector due to the increasing reliance on digital infrastructure, smart grids, and remote monitoring systems. Wind farms, solar installations, and battery storage assets are vulnerable to cyber threats that can disrupt energy production, compromise data, or impact national grid stability. With rising cyber attacks across Europe and the UK, protecting renewable assets is essential for energy security, grid resilience, and regulatory compliance.
Renewable energy companies face a range of cyber threats, including ransomware attacks, phishing, malware, and unauthorised access to SCADA systems. Threat actors may target industrial control systems (ICS) to disrupt operations or steal sensitive data. In Europe and the UK, the shift toward distributed energy systems and increased use of IoT devices introduces new vulnerabilities that require robust, sector-specific cyber defences.
